A longer lawn means that the individual grass blades (the leaves) have more surface area for photosynthesis to occur. Increased photosynthesis results in more plant growth, a more extensive root system, and a healthier plant. This sounds like a yay not a nay. What say you to this JD?

No way! I have zoysia grass in my yard & I have 2 dogs. One of my dogs is a tripod. She is missing her left front leg. The grass is very thick & grows quickly. Not mowing it would be an issue for the points you mentioned & I would be concerned about my 3 legged girl getting hurt in her attempts to keep critters of all kinds out of our yard!

By June with all of this rain- my neighbors yard has completely going to seed. So I am against it. We only mowed once but the grass is so high!!

Hi Jess :-)

First let me say that I love your column!

About the No-Mow May.

I live in an apartment so I don't do lawn maintenance.

It sounds to me as though the disadvantages seem to out weigh the advantages.

I let some of the grass grow in one section of the garden- there are some birds that find it much easier to forage in short grass. A little bit of everything for everyone!
